South African Culture Evening: Event Report

The Rotary Club Bangkok GRAD held its monthly meeting on December 17, 2024, with a special focus on South African Food & Culture. The event took place at Intercontinental Hotel Bangkok, where members and guests enjoyed an evening filled with education, delicious cuisine, and meaningful connections.

Welcome Speech by Mikhail Lebedev

The evening began with warm and inspiring words from our club president, Mikhail Lebedev, who welcomed all attendees and emphasized the importance of cultural exchange and international friendship.

Presentation by Karel De Lange

Our guest speaker, Karel De Lange, delivered a fascinating presentation titled “South African Culture in Thailand.” Karel highlighted South Africa’s rich cultural history, focusing on its connections to Thailand and the influence of other nations throughout key historical moments:

  1. The VOC Trade with Siam:
The Dutch East India Company (VOC) established trade routes between South Africa and Siam (now Thailand) in the 1600s, which marked the beginning of global commerce linking Europe, Africa, and Asia.
  2. The Boer War and Russian Influence:
Karel also highlighted the significant role played by Russian volunteers during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), a conflict between the British Empire and the Boers (Dutch settlers) in South Africa. Russian soldiers fought alongside the Boers, and their contributions are still remembered and honored today. Karel displayed images of memorials and books dedicated to this period, such as “The Russians and the Anglo-Boer War” and “A Russian on Commando” by Yevgeny Avgustus. This section provided an insightful look at how global forces shaped South Africa’s history.
  3. The Wine Legacy:
Constantina wine a world-renowned South African wine which was preferred beverage of the European elites with many such historical figures as Napoleon Bonaparte and various European royalties among them.
  4. Traditional Cuisine:
Guests were introduced to iconic South African dishes, including:
    • Biltong: Cured and dried meat, beloved for its unique flavor.
    • Boerewors: A spiced sausage symbolic of South African culinary tradition.
    • Koeksisters: A sticky, syrupy fried dough dessert enjoyed by many.

South African Food & Wine Tasting

Attendees savored a variety of traditional South African dishes and wines during the event. A special thanks goes to Charles from Siam BBQ Company, who provided an exceptional tasting experience with boerewors and other South African delicacies. Charles also gave a brief speech, sharing his passion for bringing the flavors of South Africa to Thailand. We very much encourage everyone to visit the website and get yourselves some of those amazing products that were presented to the fellow Retorians at the event.

The evening also included a special moment to recognize our new club members. Yuri Lyzhin, THE FOUNDING “GODFATHER” OF RCBG, personally presented certificates to welcome our newest members to the Rotary family.
